  Chumash Celebration
Torah transmitted to another generation

By RamazKids.com

After much preparation, second graders were ready to receive their first chumashim at the Chumash Celebration. The children learned about the Torah, how a sofer writes it, how to locate perakim (chapters) and pesukim (sentences) and more. At the celebration, the children were each called up with their families to the Torah where they recited birkot haTorah, thanking God for giving us this treasure. Their parents handed them their new chumashim, symbolically showing the transmission of Torah and the performance mitzvot from generation to generation.

Teachers welcomed families and guests on this momentous occasion. Rabbi Alan Berkowitz, Lower School headmaster, commented on importance of the festivities. "We should sing about this, we should celebrate this, and we should carry the joy we feel today in our hearts as we learn Torah throughout our lives."

The students performed several songs in celebration of this memorable milestone in their lives including shehechiyanu, to mark this new beginning.
